Week of 4/8-4/12

HI everyone,

Time is flying!  I can't believe we are almost at April vacation!  Here's a glimpse into the 5th grade world...

*Math:

• We just finished our multiplying and dividing fractions unit
• Students pre-assessed for three mini units
• We will learn about polygons
• Students will classify triangles and quadrilaterals
• Volume will be touched upon

*Literacy:

• Student chose a riveting topic for their Ted Talks
• We then worked on suspending our judgement and researched both sides of the argument
• Once enough evidence was collected, students chose the side with the stronger argument
• We then worked on writing a speech in order to deliver our message to an audience
• We worked on gripping leads, counter arguments and conclusions
• Students will perform their Ted Talk next week (Wednesday/Thursday)
• Parents are welcome to attend-a schedule will be sent home ASAP

*Social Studies

• We kicked off our Revolutionary War unit with an amazingly funny read aloud
• Students learned about the FRench and Indian War
• We’ve already talked about different perspectives of King George, Patriots, Sons of Liberty, Loyalists
• We’ve learned about the Boston Massacre
• More exciting events are coming up next week to get ready for the Freedom Trail in late May!

*Important Information:

• Memory book is DUE SUNDAY!  Please make sure your child has completed their page
• Ted Talks will take place on Wednesday and Thursday of next week
• We are finalizing the schedule and will send that out Monday
• If you have a day and time preference, let us know asap
• Jump Rope for Cause /Earth Day Celebration April 19th
