Week Of November 16th

Hello 5D Families!

Here is a glance at our week.

  • We finished our final narratives and completed beautiful Animotos to share with students in 5D and 5H.  I'll embed them in the blog next week.
  • We continued (and some wrapped up) book clubs.
  • We started unit 3 in math... FRACTIONS!
  • We continued our colonization unit in Social Studies
  • We started a STEM/engineering project in Science.
  • 5H and 5D met for "Social Hour" where we talk about social challenges and how to deal with them.

Below comes from our latest "Social Hour".  The paper represents your heart.  We talked to all students about how you feel when something negative or mean is said (as we crumpled the paper). We then had students share positive/kind words.  Although our paper did get back to paper form, it will forever have wrinkles.  Words stay with us so be careful with the ones you choose to use.

5D and 5H brainstormed what makes a REAL FRIEND.
We got together with 5H and played 6 different math games having to do with fractions, volume, and multiplication.  The students did an amazing job.

Fringo Factory- changing fractions greater than one to mixed numbers
Prism Pile Up- Volume
Tic Tac Frac- Simplifying Fractions
Tic Tac Frac
Fringo Factory
Factor Football

Love these students!  Check out the pictures below.

I shopped at IKEA to get some stools for the classroom.  I brought in seven stools still in the package along with some tools from home.  The class got right to work building each stool (without even being asked)!!!  I saw a ton of teamwork and all stools are now a part of the classroom.  So thankful for the genuine and hard working students of 5D.

I hope you all have a relaxing, enjoyable weekend with your families!

Until Monday....

Hello Parents and Families of 5D!

What a quick week this was with Veteran's Day in the middle of the week.  The students shared all the enjoyable activities they did that day.  Fun, fun!

Here's a glimpse of our week.

  • We finished unit 2 in math and took our assessment on Friday.  The assessment covered multiplication, division, powers of ten, exponential notation, interpreting remainders as well as measurement conversions.  We are onto adding and subtracting fractions in Unit 3!
  • Our narrative writing unit is almost complete.  Students are in the process of editing and revising their piece and then are putting it into an Animoto.
  • Book clubs are continuing through next week.
  • In Science, the students have worked on blood flow.  Next week, they will begin a stem project taking on the role of an engineer.
  • In Social Studies, we've looked at push and pull reasons for Europeans coming to the Americas.  We also look at Hernando Cortes and his brutal attack on the Native Americans and Aztec Empire.
The SAU16 Thanksgiving Basket is coming along nicely!  Mrs. Lankler will be coming in next Friday to gather up all the supplies.  THANK YOU to everyone for your kindness and generosity!

In preparation for a Thanksgiving craft, we would appreciate if you have any of these supplies at home to donate to 5D/5H.
  1. Small mason jars
  2. Small glass gem stones
  3. Ribbon
  4. Labels

One last reminder,  EARLY RELEASE on 11/18.  Thanksgiving break starts on Wednesday, 11/25.

Enjoy your weekend!

11/6/15

  • Thank you to all who came to parent conferences this week!  It was wonderful to sit down and talk about all the incredible work your children are doing.  Here's a glimpse into our week...

    • We have worked diligently with division.  The students no longer write remainders.  The remainders are written as either a fraction or decimal.  We are almost finished with Unit 2 and will be moving into fractions in Unit 3.
    • Reading clubs are continuing with different groups and book choices.  The students' enthusiasm around these clubs has truly impressed and inspired me.  Some of our book choices for this club were RulesFreak the MightyWonder, and Frindle.
    • We are coming to the conclusion of our narrative unit with one final piece.  The students have put together everything they have learned thus far in a STRONG piece of writing.  All students will be creating an Animoto to show how powerful writing can be.
    • In Social Studies, 5D has been working on colonization from Europe to the Americas.  We've just begun the unit.
    • In Science, 5D visits Ms. Hodgdon every other day.  They have begun to learn about the circulatory and respiratory systems.
    • We Mystery Skyped again.  This time our classroom skyped with Pennsylvania.

    Questions to promote school talk...

    1. What job did you do during the skype?
    2. How are you doing with division?
    3. What have you learned about colonization so far?  Circulatory and respiratory?
    4. What book are you reading in book club and who's in your group?
    5. What's your final narrative about?

Thank you to everyone who sent in tissues and paper towel rolls.  It's safe to say our noses will be all set for the remainder of the year!

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend.  Enjoy the warm weather!

Shannon
