Week of May 14-18

Happy Friday once again!

The students are 75% done with testing.  They did math over two days.  Science is the last for them this coming Monday and Tuesday.  Remember that Mrs. Loh and I are offering morning dodgeball on both Monday and Tuesday at 7:45.  We had 21 kids join us last week and would love to have more!  Send kids right to the gym.

Math

  • Finished SAS testing
  • Began a review for a CMS placement test
  • 6 centers through the 2 classrooms
  • Kids self paced and visited two teach centers per day
Literacy
  • Book Clubs met on Tuesday and Friday
  • Symbols and symbolism was focused on
  • Students look at certain people, things, events in their book and focused on what is may symbolize
  • The Thief of Always by Clive Barker is getting GOOD!
Science
  • Quick unit on ecosystems before science testing
  • We played "Eat or be Eaten"
  • Studied food chains and why hawks are found in NYC
  • We discovered what plants eat
  • Consumers, producers, predator, prey, food chain, photosynthesis, recycled energy
Social Studies
  • Groups are finishing up "Memestories" which showcase events of the Revolutionary War
Boston Freedom Trail:  This coming Thursday!  We have two parent chaperones for the bus rides.  All other parents are welcome to meet us at the Frog Pond on Boston Common for lunch around 11-11:30.

All students should be in the classroom at 7:45 am ready to go.  Please dress for the weather with comfortable walking shoes.  Water, snacks and lunch are a must.  Pick up is at 4:15.  I'll try my best to send an email when we leave Bunker Hill.

Week of May 7-11

Happy Friday 5D families!

Well, what a nice week it was to be back to a normal schedule!!!  We all worked hard and are having fun with geometry, fantasy and finishing our Revolutionary War unit!  
Here's a glimpse into our week!

With testing on the 14th 15th as well as the 21st and 22nd, Sam Loh and I have decided to offer up morning dodgeball to any students in our classes on the following dates.  

Monday MAY 14
Monday MAY 21 and Tuesday MAY 22

The activity in the morning will help them focus and stay calm and present during testing.  If you are interested, you may send your kids to school those mornings at 7:45 right to the gym.  Sam and I will run dodgeball as well as other outdoor activities. 

Math:

  • We studied triangles and how to classify them
  • Students measured and created angles as well as found missing measurements
  • Students learned about volume and how to find it
  • IXL has been a great tool to review for SAS testing next week
Literacy:
  • We began our fantasy unit with 5L
  • Students discovered fantasy settings are QUITE different than realistic fiction
  • We explored magical elements
  • We learned magical elements alongside our character
  • Students learned about character problems and the affects of them
  • The Thief of Always by Clive Barker is a fantastic fantasy read aloud
  • 5D and 5L began fantasy book clubs (clubs meet on Tuesdays and Fridays)
Social Studies
  • We are finishing up our read aloud
  • Students are in pairs or trios to create a "Memestory"
  • 15 events around the war are being researched by the groups and a news script will be written
Read Aloud:
  • Ask your child about our new read aloud Good Dog by Dan Gemeinhart
  • HARD TO PUT DOWN
HUGE permission slip packet went home on Wednesday.  
Please make sure all are returned to me by next Friday, the 18th.

Week of April 30-May4

Happy Friday to all!

We finished our first part of SAS testing on Friday.  The students all worked diligently on the literacy portion of the test.  Math will be taken on 5/14 and 5/15.  Science will be taken on 5/21 and 5/22.

We are working on geometry in math and then onto volume next.  Next week we start Fantasy book clubs in literacy.  Revolutionary War os coming to an end and then we will do our final unit in science on ecosystems.  This year is FLYING!

I'll keep attaching important dates for our spring here.  There is surely a lot to put on your calendars!
