Week of January 20-24th, 2020

Happy Friday, 5D Families!


Time in 2020 is truly flying!  I’m noticing all my students’ organization and transitions are getting better!  Thank you for your support to make sure your child is getting what they need! Here’s a glimpse into our week...


Math
-We worked on our mid year math diagnostic
-We begin fractions next week
-It’ll be super important your child has a deep understanding of fraction number sense


Literacy
-Students wrote leads for their research reports
-We then worked on making our sub topic paragraphs interesting and personal
-Students will finish their writing next week with a self-edit, peer edit and teacher edit
-We will be working to create books once Mrs. Loh returns on ⅔!
-More details to follow but kids are excited!!!!


Science
-We discovered why the moon has phases and how it follows a pattern
-We discovered what shooting stars really are!
-We also reviewed the different Mysteries we have done


STEMbassadors visited.  5D students worked in groups of three to create a drone to safely deliver iphones.  Some students are coming back this Saturday to work further with these UNH students.

2/24/20 February Vacation Week

FIRST GRADE IS TAKING DONATIONS AND LOOKING FOR SHOPPERS 1stGrade Market "Save the Koalas" is Thursday, Feb 6th at 8:30am. All ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND This is our 3rd Annual First Grade Market. This year will be donating all the money raised to help the animals in fire-ravaged Australia. First graders will be working on a variety of handmade creations to sell at the market. Most items will be sold for $1. Any donations are also welcome!

Our class will be going to the first grade market on February 6th if you wanted to send money in with your child.

Week of January 6-10

Happy Friday, 5D Families!

We all made it through our first full week of 2020!  The students have transitioned nicely back into our school routine and have worked hard all week.

Math
-We continue division with decimals
-Students used base ten blocks to visually see division
-Students played games and used IXL to strengthen division
-Mrs. Gorman comes in to support anyone who needs it!
-We will be assessing this unit in another week or so
-Fraction Number Sense will be next!

Literacy
-We took notes using two different formats
-Topic/Sub-Topic/Details
-Boxes and Bullets
-Students brainstormed questions around our science unit to research in literacy
-Students decided which format of notes suits them best
-We began our extensive research for this writing
-Students are utilizing all the amazing library websites on SMS’s webpage

Science
-Students worked on two different activities to help them get to know Earth’s place in the universe
-One Mystery involved if the Earth or sun is moving and why we have day and night
-Another Mystery involved where our time/calendar came from
-Students are working hard to notice patterns in our lives such as hours of daylight, moon phases, seasons and tidal patterns
-Be sure to ask your child about their researchable question!!!!

Homophone Spelling
-This week and next the students have homophones as their spelling words
-They are working so hard to apply these into their writing!
