Week of 4/4-4/8

  • *Math:
    • Began our self guided unit on +/- of fractions and mixed numbers
    • Adding and subtracting with like denominators
    • Adding and subtracting with unlike denominators
    • Regrouping with  subtraction
    • Multi-step problem solving of fractions
    • Using Edpuzzle, task cards, IXL and online games to master the I Cans
    • The assessment for this math unit will be coming soon….

    *Literacy:
    • Began our new unit which is centered around argument and advocacy
    • Discussed the difference between opinion and having a strong argument
    • Went over claims, reasons and evidence in order to have a solid argument
    • Looked at advertisements and determined if what they were claiming about their product had a solid argument
    • Talked about how informed citizens need to suspend judgement and gather evidence from both sides of an argument before choosing a side
    • Looked at different arguments about chocolate milk and whether or not it is healthy
    • Started new book clubs
    • Students chose a fiction book of interest and will be having book club meetings
    • Wrote letters to Gertrude and Ruth, two elderly visitors who will be visiting the classroom during the month of march (the drill sergeants have left, so it was time for new characters)

    *Science
    • We began our next science unit all about the Earth’s spheres
    • Quick refreshing of learning about gravity and the water cycle
    • Students worked in groups to act out a skit of the life cycle of a water drop
    • We will begin with the hydrosphere then continue on with the geosphere, atmosphere and biosphere

    *Choose Love
    • We learned today about apologizing
    • Practiced a genuine apology using specific steps
    • Learned about apologizing and the brain
    • There’s powerful research behind forgiveness and apologizing

    *Important Information:
    No School Tuesday, March 12
    Staff vs 5th Grade Basketball Game Thursday, March 21
