Week of January 8-12, 2018

Hello all!

Good news!  We thrived and survived our first full week of 2018!  I'm happy we have an extra day off though in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.  Ask your child all about the book we read today.  It was all about MLK Jr and it was written by a student in my last year's class!

Here's a glimpse into our week...

Math
  • Found equivalent fractions
  • Simplified fractions to simplest form/lowest terms
  • Reviewed fractions as division
  • Use EdPuzzle as well as self guided videos
  • Took a quick check assessment
  • iReady mid year diagnostic on Thursday!

Literacy
  • BENCHMARKING!!!  I love having students read and reflect on it with me
  • My, they have grown!  I'll report on it in report card
  • Literacy menu
Science
  • finished up an experiment with data, analysis and conclusion
  • completed a lab report
  • Reflected on SeeSaw

Words Their Way-
  • assessed on Monday and Friday; new sorts coming Tuesday!
  • Kids are in groups according to a pre-assessment.  Make sure to reiterate to your child that they are right where they need to be to learn best!
Buddies
  • We did a stem activity about building the tallest tower out of pipe cleaners

Mrs. Eitler
We talked all about kids' stressors that cause anxiety and then talked about the strategy of guided meditation!  Kids then practiced this strategy in class.  I'd highly recommend looking up guided meditation for kids on youtube to use at home!  Small "Stress Busters" groups will start to work with Mrs. Eitler to explore other strategies.  Let me know if you'd be interested for your child to be part of this!

Happy New Year to all!

We had a short, successful week back.  The snow on Thursday was a nice little break for our re-entry into 2018!

Here's what we did this short week back....

Math

  • Began a fraction unit
  • Centers included self guided learning with videos
  • Learned that fractions and division have a lot in common
Literacy
  • Worked on conclusions for our research report
  • We will be creating amazing books from all our research
  • Took a grammar diagnostic on www.noredink.com
If your child would like to access this at home, he/she is more than welcome to!  It's an interactive way to learn all about grammar in a personalized way!

Science

  • We are working on a self guided performance task on Matter
  • Students worked solo or in pairs to perform an experiment and take data
  • From this, each student will write a conclusion based on the outcome of the experiment
STEMbassadors!
They are coming to work with 5D on Friday 1/26 to do some cool activities!  Make sure if your child wants to be a part of the Saturday event, have them bring in their form ASAP!

Anxiety

Judy Eitler will be coming in on Tuesday to work with all of 5D around what anxiety is and strategies to help.  She's planned two lessons for the month of January and then will follow up with smaller groups to work on strategies.  Please let me know if you'd be interested for your child to attend a small group!

Qurater 2 closes on Friday, January 19.  Report cards will go home on Friday, February 2nd.

Enjoy the weekend!
