Week of 1/25-1/29

Families and Friends of 5D,

Here's a glimpse into our week...

• In math, the students completed Unit 4 with an assessment on Friday.  We are officially half way through our Every Day Math program.  During the week, students shopped for themselves to spend $500.  Some shopped with a theme in mind!  Some themes were Man Caves, Boho Bedroom, Outdoor Fun, Game Room, Design and Decor among many others.  
• In literacy, students self-edited their research writing, then peer edited and finally met with either me, Ms. Matlack or Mrs. Metz to complete a final edit.  Next week the students will create a way to present their research.  Documentaries, educational books, brochures, Animotos and Interactive Google Slides are among some of the choices students have brainstormed.
• Spellingcity.com was introduced and given as homework a few nights this week.  On this, all students have 7 spelling and vocabulary activities followed by two assessments.  The students learned where to find their word list right on their home page.  They need to find the tab for "Search", scroll to "Word Lists" and then find their list on the left hand side under "Recent Lists".
• In science, the students have chosen groups and then brainstormed a scientific question around matter to test.  On Thursday each group wrote up an official lab report including materials and procedure. Each individual will work on a hypothesis as well as thinking throughout the experiment.  They will be performing their experiments on Monday.

Please make sure your child has returned their form for the Grade 5 versus SMS Staff Basketball game.  It's sure to be a memorable night!

 Valentine's Day is right around the corner!  We will host a party on Friday, February 12th at 1:30-2:30 pm.  If your child would like to bring in Valentines, please make sure he/she brings in one for every child in the class.  I'll send home a class list.  At this time, the students will showcase their Research Presentations to all of you!

For the celebration we will need snacks and drinks.  I will send an email closer to the date and everyone can reply all if they can bring something.  Thank you!!!
